Take a minute to have a look at Helen’s RSGo blog, Ready Steady Go The opening quote on the header is that RSGo states that overanalysis is the navy blue of India. I like that. Take your time as you go through it. While it does not appear to be much at first, this blog is content rich. Helen has fashioned this blog as a never-ending quest for genius recognition. The Webster definition of genius holds one of this quality to be an extraordinary aptitude for creative artistic work or…a person of marked ability in any field….or a person who exerts great influence over another. Hmm. I had to think about this as I went through RSGo, and I think it is fair to say that Helen reaches at least two of these qualities at some level. We aren’t talking Einstein here, but I always figured the genius aptitude to be one that is very out of the box, thinks differently than others, and expresses themselves accordingly. Not all geniuses are Rocket Scientists, and not all Rocket Scientists are geniuses. I think it is fair to say that Helen falls under the out of the box category within the genius spectrum, and consequently, expresses herself accordingly.
As you navigate through the site you will see posts on a variety of seemingly little bits of nothingdom. How she scored cheap concert tickets, a trip to the Gap combined with two very cute little otters, a mad quest for a picture of the perfect cankle which in itself makes the blog very funny, and some food related posts. One of my favorite posts is a take on a New York ad stating, and I am quoting, “not everything needs to be done in a New York Minute…†to which end Helen comments on how copyediting for example should fall on the list of taking time to do the little things. I think only a genius would take the time to not only note this error, but write about it publicly at a later point. The only exception I took to her posts was during a currency debacle she, in very small print I, pointedly left out Canada and Australia “due to their ugh, coloniesâ€. That however is merely personal and has no bearing on the actual blog content. The right sided navigation bars contain other links to go to and some very cute quips she has picked up along the way. Links will take you to Gawker, a daily Manhattan gossip column, and Scanner a news bustier so to speak that “lifts and separates†human interest news stories. You will also find here some very clever quips of quotes (or inflated opinions as she calls them) she has picked up from, not too sure, but they are funny and include: “also, I’m not that witty, I’m from Ohio,†or “you’re the smartest person I know, you’re probably even smarter than meâ€. Some other posts I found interesting were: plagiarism deathmatch and how nerds make dessert.
Overall I am giving Helen a 3.4 here. I found the content and uniqueness of the site remarkable, but it was lacking something. If she is getting 100 visitors a day I think some AdSense or other kinds of advertising would bode her well. Perhaps a little more color would liven this one up a little as well. The content however is very unique and I would not recommend any changes to her style or her writing. The activity is fairly regular, though somewhat sporadic. It ranged from daily posts to nothing since the 19th of April. While this is not a site I would personally visit every day, I think it has its merits, and I am certain she does have a following that is regular. With a few appearance changes and some advertising, I think this blog could do very well.
